hen her phone rang in the middle of the night, Alex expected it was Carter touching base, just like she’d requested. Nevertheless, having been asleep for over two hours, she was groggy when she picked up.

Carter was plagued with guilt as he dialed her number. He had known the Walkers for only a short time, yet James had already risked his life to help protect him and his family. And now, his beloved daughter was also involuntarily tangled in the ordeal.

"Hi Alex. It’s me, Carter."

Clearing her throat, she replied, "Hey, um, yeah, what’s up? How’s everything? You guys okay?"

"Well, yeah, we’re both alive. So, that’s good news, right?" He said, nervously. "But…"

"But?" she echoed with apprehension.

Carter's voice shook slightly as he spoke. "Well, I had to take your dad to Simeon Heights General Hospital. He—"

Alarmed, she quickly cut in. "What! What happened? Is he okay?!"

"Alex, please try to stay calm," said Carter, attempting to defuse the situation. "He’s okay; he's going to be all right."

"Are--are you sure? What happened? What's wrong with him?" She asked.

"Yes, I'm sure," he reassured before continuing as calmly as possible. "The thing is… his left ankle. It’s… broken."

"Oh, no!" She Gasped.

"Yeah, it--it's pretty bad. But like I told you, the doc says he's going to be fine. And your dad, he’s the one who asked me to call his daughter—you—and he gave me your number. I never told him I knew you."

…

"Alex? You still there?"

"Yes, I am," she responded. "Sorry, it's… a lot to process. But I'm relieved, I guess. Somewhat, anyway. I mean, it could have been much worse, right?"

"Oh, absolutely, yeah," he agreed.

"But, to be honest, he just drives me nuts," she said in frustration, adding, "Do you know how many times this kind of thing has happened over the years? I mean… I understand why he does what he does; and, don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he helped you. But as his daughter, it's… it’s just really upsetting."

"Um, yeah, I can imagine. Look, I’m really sorry. I—"

"There’s no point in talking about this now. I’m getting dressed. I’ll be right over. So, I’ll see you there? What room did you say he was in?"

"We’re in room 112."
